ROCH HACHANAH  -   Dans la Torah, le jour de Roch Hachanah est appelé Yom Terouah /jour de la sonnerie  (Nombres 29:1) C’est dans la Michnah qu’il marque le début de l’année  (Roch Hachanah 1:1) . Roch Hachanah marque le début des dix jours qui mènent à Yom Kippour. C’est un des quatre jours pendant lesquels le monde est jugé . La Tossefta affirme que le jugement est prononcé  à Roch Hashanah et scellé à Yom Kippur.

C’est pourquoi la période entre Roch Hachanah et Yom Kippour est devenue un moment consacré à l’introspection et au repentir.

On Rosh Hashanah eve we greet each other with a special greeting, Leshanah Tovah Tikatevu ; It means , « May G’d write you down for a good year . » There is an old legend that G’d keeps a great book containing everyone’s  name, and during the High Holidays He writes down, in this Book of Life , whether or not each person has led a good life during the year. This is just a legend , of course . It shows that Rosh Hashanah is a day when our actions are judged by G’d  and by ourselves; Another name for Rosh Hashanah is Yom Hadin, Day of Judgment.
